Rights Manager, Content & Business Development

As part of WEBTOON Entertainment’s Rights Department, this position supports both the Content and Business Development departments:
  • For Content, the Rights Manager will acquire rights and perform related business functions playing a critical, front-line role between the Producers and Editors on the Content team, who work with WEBTOON’s content partners on a creative level, and the Legal Department, who drafts and finalizes agreements.
  • For Business Development, the Rights Manager will participate and support the team’s efforts to identify, define, evaluate, prioritize, strategize, and execute initiatives to expand WEBTOON’s business opportunities.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 
A. Content
  • Acquisition: Negotiate with creators, studios, content owners, and IP owners to acquire rights for the company in connection with greenlighted content initiatives, working closely with the Head of Rights, the VP, Head of Content, and the Legal Department. Explain WEBTOON’s business terms to creative partners with varying levels of experience and knowledge to enable strong, long-term working relationships.
  • Management: Supervise the acquisition process, working with Content and Legal, from greenlight through signed contracts and beyond. Assume responsibility for the business aspects of the Content Department’s relationships with creators, studios, content owners, and IP owners, in collaboration with the Head of Rights, Senior Rights Associate, Rights Associate, and members of the Content Department.
  • Prospecting: Develop relationships and scout opportunities for consideration by the Content Department, providing information and materials necessary to properly evaluate through the greenlight process.
  • Analysis: In partnership with Content, Legal, Business Development, LCM/Operations, and Finance, analyze creator compensation models, perform competitive research, and make recommendations for deal terms for creative talent that reinforce and advance WEBTOON’S business strategies and objectives.
B. Business Development
  • Prospecting: Identify potential growth opportunities for the company through qualitative and quantitative data gathering and research, understanding of commercial trends, analysis of key players in the marketplace, potential partners and competitors, etc.
  • Analysis: Evaluate new business opportunities by building high-level financial models, designing flowcharts, developing strategic plans, comparative models, and similar tools necessary for the proper consideration and prioritization of potential initiatives.
  • Presentation: Develop proposals and presentations that succinctly and accurately provide the necessary background, data, and projections sufficient for senior management to quickly and accurately digest, consider, and provide direction with regard to potential new business initiatives and partnerships.
  • Negotiation: Lead and support multiple concurrent projects, driving each one forward, ensuring clear communication and collaboration across cross-functional internal teams and external partners.
  • Management: Assume ongoing responsibility for working with partners engaged in strategic company initiatives.
C. General
  • Support Head of Rights, VP-Head of Content, and Head of Business Development in the advancement of the company’s strategic initiatives and ongoing operations.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years in business affairs, business development, strategy, and/or consulting roles, preferably within digital content/publishing, media and/or entertainment.
  • Bachelor's Degree required; MBA a plus
  • A deep understanding of rights agreements, deal structures and terms for publishing, licensing, entertainment, and other IP and content-related businesses.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships and negotiate strategically, creatively, and successfully with a wide range of potential partners at all levels of scale and sophistication, from early-stage independent comics creators to large, multinational corporations.
  • Proven track record of strong initiative and task ownership, the ability to operate independently, and multi-tasking effectively, managing high volume workflow in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment to meet tight deadlines while maintaining close attention to detail.
  • Expert proficiency in Excel; strong facility with Word, PowerPoint, and similar tools.
